Article 7: Elders A . Qualifications 1. The elder is to demonstrate maturity and accountability in his Christian life (Titus 1:6-9; 1 Tim 3:1-7) 2. The elder is to be a male (Titus 1:6; 1 Tim 3:2) 3. The elder is to be a member of the church for at least 2 years and an individual who has been active in ministry to others for at least one year. B. Responsibilities 1. Active involvement / leadership in at least one church ministry 2. Active involvement & leadership in at least one of the four ministry teams 3. Meet weekly for prayer and Bible study. 4. As the Lord leads, provide spiritual guidance to all aspects of the ministry. 5. Supervise the membership application process. 6. Assist with matters of church discipline when necessary. 7. Join with other elders in responding to requests for prayer and healing (James 5:14) 8. Nominate leaders for the ministry team. 9. Select candidates to fill the unexpired portion of a term in cases where elected officers resign or are unable to fulfill their responsibilities. C. Office All elders except the chairman are to be appointed from the membership by the current elders and affirmed by the congregation. D. Accountability 1. Accusations against an elder will not be considered unless submitted in writing and supported by two or three witnesses, in accordance with I Tim. 5:19-20. 2. Should it be proven that the elder has erred in doctrine or conduct, he shall be charitably admonished by the elders with the goal of restoration. If, in the opinion of a majority of the elders, an elder should be removed, a resolution from the elders will be brought forward to the congregation. The elder will be removed immediately following the approval of a dismissal resolution by a 2/3 majority of the voting members. |
